The achievement of a standard PRM education and training for medical students worldwide would represent an important achievement for the discipline and the achievement of Rehabilitation 2030 goals. It would allow us to foster a deeper understanding of the needs of people living with or experiencing disability, the goals of rehabilitation, the role of PRM physicians within the care pathways, and their commitments towards patients, carers, rehabilitation health professionals, and other medical specialists, the policymakers, and the society. Currently, in most LMIC countries, rehabilitation education and training infrastructures are insufficient. The potential workforce might lack awareness of available career pathways in rehabilitation, and existing practitioners may face challenges in accessing opportunities for ongoing education, hindering their ability to enhance clinical competence and foster professional growth. Even in developed countries, people who could benefit from rehabilitation are inadequately referred for such health services. Studies demonstrate that access to existing rehabilitation services is hampered by general practitioners’ poor education about the scope and effectiveness of rehabilitation. Conversely, the successful implementation of education programs for the rehabilitation workforce has the potential to bridge the rehabilitation access gap within the context of UHC.
