Physical and rehabilitation medicine must be considered in a context of a multimodal approach in which the physiatrist must be able to govern the multimodal approach to the patient as a whole.
Two of the aspects of basic sciences that must become part of the cultural background of those who deal with rehabilitation are the influence of cellular oxidative stress in generating and maintaining chronicity and the understanding of the mechanisms generating a chronic pain status. This is in order to optimize treatment both through the typical disciplines of rehabilitation but also through the wise use of conventional and complementary pharmacology. Oxi-S in various forms is present in all degenerative and chronic pathologies: cardio-pneumological, degenerative osteoarticular as well as in pain.
Oxi-S is one of the mechanisms with which pain becomes chronic in a state of central sensitization. The presence of Oxi-S and the ability of rehabilitation to reduce its levels and therefore to positively interfere with the rehabilitation outcome must be used. This ability has been widely demonstrated in cardiopulmonary diseases as well as in the treatment of the so-called Long-COVID. The positive role of a multimodal rehabilitation approach that includes movement has also been demonstrated at a clinical level in pain control.
