Obesity is a complex chronic disease its prevalence has significantly increased in recent decades, making it a global public health issue. In addition to its well-known association with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, obesity has a considerable impact on the musculoskeletal and lymphatic systems, contributing to the development of osteoarticular pathologies and lymphedema. Obesity increases the mechanical load on joints, especially weight-bearing ones such as the knees and hips, accelerating cartilage wear and promoting osteoarthritis. Additionally, excess adipose tissue produces inflammatory mediators that can exacerbate joint inflammation, worsening conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Recent studies indicate that individuals with obesity experience higher disease activity and lower quality of life due to increased pain and generalized inflammation. Obesity is a significant risk factor for lymphedema, as excess fat can compress lymphatic vessels, impairing proper lymph drainage. Additionally, chronic inflammation associated with obesity can damage the lymphatic system, increasing susceptibility to lymphedema. Studies have shown that patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 have an increased risk of developing this condition. The implementation of comprehensive therapeutic strategies including pharmacological, surgical, and rehabilitative interventions is essential to effectively address these complications and improve patients’ quality of life.
