Diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern, affecting millions of people worldwide and has been rising more rapidly in low- and middle-income countries. Its complications extend beyond metabolic disturbances, impacting multiple organ systems and significantly influencing rehabilitation outcomes.
Managment of diabetes requires lifelong multidisciplinary treatment, but also non therapeutic issues.
Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine has a real role in the assessment, but also in the primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of diabetes mellitus.
This presentation explores the implications of diabetes in rehabilitation medicine, with a focus on cardiovascular – neurological – musculoskeletal complications, urinary and sexual dysfunctions.
