Competency-based training emerges as a preferred model due to its potential efficiency in medical education. Documents such as the CanMEDS Framework and the World Health Organization Rehabilitation Competency Framework provide excellent guidance on the preparations of curricula in undergraduate and postgraduate training prioritizing not only knowledge, but also skills and attitudes physicians need to have to meet the health care needs of the individuals in the best possible way.
Competency-based training in rehabilitation gains more importance day by day given the data that one in every three individuals need rehabilitation throughout the world. The recent “Rehabilitation 2030” initiative” of 2017 and the WHA Resolution on “Strengthening rehabilitation in health systems” endorsed in May, 2023 which is supported by the World Rehabilitation Alliance with its Workstreams, are developments that increase the importance of education in rehabilitation which is the first step for successful outcomes.
This Workshop, joining the scientific forces of the two prominent organizations in training, the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPM&R) and the European Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (EBPRM), will discuss the value of “competency-based training and assessment in PRM/PM&R training along with the current best examples.
