Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and wildfires, as well as human-made disasters like civil wars, result in a high burden of traumatic injuries, including spinal cord injuries (SCI), brain injuries, amputations, fractures, and peripheral nerve injuries. The immediate aftermath of these events requires a coordinated approach to rehabilitation that extends from emergency response to long-term recovery. This workshop will explore the challenges and solutions in disaster rehabilitation by analyzing four major disaster events: the 2005 Pakistan Earthquake, Bangladesh Floods, 2024 California Wildfires, and the Sudan Civil War Crisis. This session will feature expert speakers who will present case-based insights from their experiences in disaster rehabilitation, focusing on preparedness, immediate response strategies, and integration of rehabilitation into emergency medical teams. Specific topics will include the role of rehabilitation in disaster settings, strategies for managing complex injuries such as SCI, and the importance of early rehabilitation interventions to improve functional outcomes. Attendees will also gain insights into the social, infrastructural, and political barriers that impact rehabilitation efforts in different regions. Each speaker will discuss the unique challenges and lessons learned in their respective contexts, providing insights into effective rehabilitation practices in disaster zones. The workshop will cover various aspects of emergency rehabilitation, including disaster preparedness, immediate response strategies, integration of rehabilitation into emergency medical teams, and long-term recovery planning.
