The foot represents the only point of contact with the ground during any locomotor activity and sport specific skills, thus resulting in it being the end-point for transmission of forces produced by the lower extremity muscles and absorption of the shock created at foot impact. At the same time the foot has an extremely complex structure requiring a delicate interplay between timing and multifunctionality of a series of small joints and muscles to provide a smooth and efficient motion. Advances in technology today allows to obtain a precise and detailed information about the kinetics of foot strike, allowing to better individualize treatment plans and raise red flags for potential risk of injury. The purpose of the session is to review the current literature on foot functionality as it relates to sports performance as well as the technology behind plantar pressure mapping and its application in sports medicine for rehabilitation and injury risk assessment. The last part of the session will focus on selected case studies for the most common lower limb injuries in sport. Being “global solutions for rehabilitation” the main theme of the Congress, the application of plantar pressure mapping technology align perfectly with the aim of the event.
