The explosion in the elderly population, which continues to rise without the necessary social support systems being in place, is still ongoing and surpasses the overall increase rate of the total population.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists take on various important roles related to geriatrics, often based on practical applications with their team. These roles are; primary patient care in rehabilitation centers or subacute follow-up clinics, consultation for outpatient cases in different departments (such as acute care hospitals, day hospitals, home healthcare services) and non-hospital-based care practices.

In other units, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists assess the functional and medical status of elderly individuals, work closely with the treatment team, and assist in setting realistic goals. When necessary, they help coordinate interdisciplinary teamwork and monitor the effectiveness of the treatment. There may be overlaps and differences in the roles of different rehabilitation providers. It is also a fact that an effective communication network and coordination are necessary to better serve elderly individuals.
