As the population treated in rehabilitation settings becomes older with increasing medical complexity, it is important for rehabilitation practitioners to be able to treat individuals with more than one disability. Among the most common conditions to present with disability are cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. It is essential for our rehabilitation programs to provide care for individuals with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and another disability.
This session will present solutions from around the world to providing two types of adaptations for multi disabled individuals. First, the adaptations and creation of safe programs of rehabilitation for people with brain injury and stroke, spinal cord injury, limb loss, or musculoskeletal issues who also have cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions. Second, there will be a discussion of adapting cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs to allow for treatment of our patients with neurological, spinal cord injuries, musculoskeletal issues who develop cardiovascular or pulmonary disease that will benefit from rehabilitation. This session is designed for practitioners of all skill and experience levels.
It will start with an overview of the epidemiology of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease as well as the prevalence and issues of individuals who present with more than one disability including their cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. Special attention will be given to both safety and also to the morbidity and mortality benefits of incorporation of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation in the programs of patient recovery. The session will be divided into a lectures giving a summary of cardiovascular and pulmonary disease in various communities.
This will be followed by lectures on
1) treating patients with primary disability for cardiovascular and pulmonary disease,
2) application of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation principles in the rehabilitation of patients with new primary neurological or musculoskeletal disability who have cardiovascular and pulmonary co-morbidity.
The session will conclude with a roundtable for a question and answer period to allow participants to explore options for their unique patient populations. Our lecturers are from all areas of the world who are experts in cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation and are familiar with application of these rehabilitation principles in a variety of settings.
