This workshop emphasizes inclusivity and accessibility for PWDs in the realm of exercise. By making exercise an accessible option for PWDs, instead of only nondisabled individuals, the workshop aligns with conference goals of inclusivity and equity. By ensuring that physicians and people know how to modify exercise to support broader ability levels, this workshop helps establish exercise as a sustainable preventative and therapeutic measure.
This tackles the global challenge of poor disability knowledge/education from the root cause and works toward the SDGs of “good health and well-being” and “reduced inequalities.” These goals are timely and important given the rising rates of disability globally: 16% of the world has a disability according to the WHO, a figure that is only growing. Among PWDs, rates of obesity and chronic illness are significantly higher, and currently, exercise is not a common prescription to PWDs despite being a common preventative health measure. This workshop can change that stereotype.
By educating physicians and the general public on preventative and therapeutic exercise modifications, this workshop can help individuals tackle their health at-home and disability health outcomes can be improved before progressing to severe complications such as obesity and chronic illness.
