As technology, learning modes and individual cultures have changed over time, the optimal modalities for the learners of those generations have also changed. It has become clear that prior dominant paradigms of Socratic teaching and textbook reading are no longer suitable to achieve educational excellence. Fortunately, the modern challenge of educating the younger generation of learners has been well-studied in a number of countries and there is insight available to better adapt to this generation’s strengths and weaknesses. We will address the available data and provide insight into our own growth as educators. Additionally, we will point out areas where the current generation excels compared to prior generations. Each speaker was born in a different Western cultural generation (Baby Boomer, Generation X and Millennial) and will provide insight into the flexibility needed to meet the current needs of our learners. Additionally, the speakers have experience as educators in low to middle income countries, including experience teaching specifically in Africa. For this reason, time will be spent demonstrating the contrast in our observations of learners’ approaches between LMIC and western countries.
