Short Description

Spinal cord injury (SCI) remains one of the most complex and debilitating conditions in physical and rehabilitation medicine, particularly in low- and middle-income regions like Africa, where resources for comprehensive rehabilitation care may be limited. Pain after SCI, including both nociceptive and neuropathic pain, profoundly impacts the patient’s quality of life and poses significant challenges for rehabilitation teams.
This session will explore the multidimensional nature of pain following SCI, from its pathophysiology to the latest evidence-based treatments, with a focus on how rehabilitation strategies can be adapted for different global contexts, particularly in Africa. By emphasizing accessible solutions, this presentation aims to provide an inclusive framework for SCI rehabilitation that integrates innovative and sustainable practices, particularly for under-resourced settings.
The lecture will also highlight how integrating innovative technologies, community-based rehabilitation, and multi-disciplinary approaches can serve as global solutions to alleviate pain and improve functional outcomes for individuals living with SCI in Africa and beyond.
